Less than a year after this previously unpublished photograph was taken, Davis and the group he played with on hat March night in 1958 released Kind of Blue. Even artists outside of jazz — rockers like Duane Allman and Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright, for example — have cited the album as inspiration, and in 2003 it was ranked No. 12 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (the highest berth for a jazz record on the list). Davis’ friend Quincy Jones, meanwhile, has said: “I play Kind of Blue every day. It’s my orange juice.”
